Royal Obituary: The Late Earl of Harewood

His Royal Highness George Henry Hubert Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood, passed away on 11 July 2011, at the age of 88. A beloved member of the royal family and a devoted public servant, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A Distinguished Lineage

Born on 7 February 1923, George Lascelles was the eldest son of the 6th Earl of Harewood and Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V. His father was a prominent statesman and Governor-General of Canada, while his mother was known for her humanitarian work.

Upon his father's death in 1947, George Lascelles succeeded as the 7th Earl of Harewood. He inherited a vast estate, including Harewood House in Yorkshire, one of the most magnificent stately homes in England.

A Lifetime of Service

Throughout his life, the Earl of Harewood devoted himself to a wide range of public causes. He was a patron of the arts, supporting numerous orchestras and opera companies. He also served as Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire for over 30 years, working tirelessly to promote the county and its people.
