Manchester City progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate victory over Real Madrid, although they lost the second leg 1-0 at the Bernabeu Stadium.

The visitors had taken a big step towards the last four with a 4-0 win in the first leg, and they never looked like surrendering their advantage in the Spanish capital. Real Madrid dominated possession for long periods, but they rarely threatened a City defence that was well marshalled by Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte.

The hosts' best chance came in the second half when Karim Benzema's header was cleared off the line by Kyle Walker, but that was as close as they came to scoring. City, meanwhile, could have added to their lead on several occasions, with Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish both going close.

In the end, City held on for a comfortable win that sees them reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second time in three years. They will now face either Villarreal or Bayern Munich in the letzten vier.
